That is exactly the problem PM Ujjwala Yojana was launched to solve.
Now in its third phase, widely referred to as Ujjwala Yojana 3.0, the government has approved an additional 25 lakh deposit-free LPG connections for the financial year 2025 – 26. What Is Ujjwala Yojana 3.0?
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was first launched on 1 May 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Its goal: bring clean LPG cooking fuel to women from BPL (Below Poverty Line) households who had never had a gas connection.
Phase 1 (2016–2019): Targeted 8 crore connections achieved by September 2019.
Phase 2 / Ujjwala 2.0 (2021 onwards): Simplified documentation, included migrant workers, and expanded categories. An additional 75 lakh connections were sanctioned for FY 2023–24 to 2025–26. This target was achieved ahead of schedule in July 2024.
Ujjwala 3.0 (FY 2025–26): An additional 25 lakh connections approved by the Union Cabinet for the current financial year, taking the overall target to 10.6 crore connections. As of August 2026, over 10.57 crore connections have been released under the scheme.
Note: Officially, the government still refers to this under the PMUY or Ujjwala 2.0 framework. “Ujjwala 3.0” is the widely used term for the FY 2025–26 phase with the new 25-lakh allocation.
Who Can Apply? – Eligibility Criteria
The application must be made in the name of an adult woman (18 years or older) in the household. The key conditions are:

- You are a woman aged 18 years or above
- Your household does not already have an LPG connection from any gas agency
- You can submit a deprivation declaration confirming your household is economically deprived.
Migrant workers: If your current address is different from your Aadhaar address, you can still apply using a self declaration form (Annexure I) – no additional address proof needed.

How to Apply Ujjwala Yojana 3.0 Online
You can apply online directly through the Oil Marketing Company (OMC) of your choice – Indian Oil (Indane), Bharat Gas (BPCL), or HP Gas (HPCL). All three are accessible from the official portal.
Step 1: Visit the Official Website Go to pmuy.gov.in and click on “Apply for New Ujjwala PMUY Connection”.

Step 2: Choose Your Gas Company Three options appear: Indane (Indian Oil), Bharat Gas (BPCL), and HP Gas (HPCL). Click “Click here to apply” under whichever company serves your area.

Step 3: Read the Eligibility and Documents List A new page will show you the eligibility criteria and required documents.
Step 4: Fill the Online Application Form Enter your personal details – name, Aadhaar number, address, mobile number, and bank account details. Fill in the form exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar.
Step 5: Upload Documents Upload scanned copies or clear photos of your Aadhaar, ration card, bank passbook, and photograph. If you are a migrant applicant, upload the self declaration (Annexure I) instead of a separate address proof.
Step 6: Submit and Note Your Reference Number After submission, you will receive a reference/application number. Save it, you will need it to track your application status.
Step 7: e-KYC (if required) Some applicants may be asked to complete e-KYC through face authentication at their nearest distributor. This step is now increasingly used to verify identity.
PM Ujjwala Yojana 3.0 Benefits
Under PM Ujjwala Yojana, the connection is completely deposit free. The government provides cash assistance of ₹2,050 per connection (for a 14.2 kg cylinder), which covers:
- Cylinder security deposit – ₹1,700
- Pressure regulator – ₹150
- LPG hose – ₹100
- Domestic Gas Consumer Card – ₹25
- Inspection, installation, and demonstration charges – ₹75
In addition, all PMUY beneficiaries receive:
- ✅ First LPG refill, completely free
- ✅ Hotplate (gas stove), completely free
- ✅ Deposit free connection, no upfront payment
LPG Subsidy
For FY 2025 – 26, PMUY beneficiaries receive a subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder on up to 9 refills per year. The subsidy amount is credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account via the PAHAL (DBTL) scheme.
Apply Free Gas Connection Offline
You can register yourself for this scheme by visiting nearest LPG gas distributor office:
- Visit your nearest LPG gas distributor (Indane, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas).
- Ask for the PMUY KYC form, available in English, Hindi, and 10 regional languages from pmuy.gov.in.
- Fill the form and attach photocopies of required documents.
- Also fill the Deprivation Declaration form and, if needed, the Migrant Self-Declaration (Annexure I).
- Submit the completed forms to the distributor.
- The distributor will verify your details and initiate the connection process.
Check Your Ujjwala Yojana Application Status
After applying, you can check your status through:
- Online: Log in to your respective OMC portal (Indane, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas) using your application reference number or registered mobile number.
- At the distributor: Visit or call your selected distributor with your reference number.
- MOPNG e-Seva portal: mopnge-seva.in – for grievances and status-related queries.
