How to Apply for EWS Certificate – Eligibility, Documents & Online Process

If you belong to the general category and your family’s total annual income is below ₹8 lakh, you are most likely eligible for an EWS certificate. This certificate gives you access to 10% reservation in central government jobs and central educational institutions.

In this post, we’ll explain what EWS means, who can apply, what documents you need, how to apply both online and offline, and how long the certificate stays valid.

What is EWS Certificate

EWS stands for Economically Weaker Section. It is an official government document that confirms a person from the general (unreserved) category has a low annual family income and does not hold significant property assets.

This provides 10% reservation for economically weaker sections in admissions and government employment. The EWS certificate is the document that proves your eligibility for this reservation.

EWS Certificate Eligibility Criteria

1. Applicant must be a ‘General’ category candidate (not under reservation for SC, ST or OBC).
2. The applicant family’s total annual income should be less than Rs 8,00,000.
3. This includes all methods of earning for you such as agriculture, salary, business before applying.

“Family” for this purpose includes: the applicant, parents, spouse, and unmarried children below 18 years of age.

Property conditions – Your family should NOT own any of the following:

If your family owns multiple properties, their combined area is considered. And even if your income is below ₹8 lakh, exceeding any one of these property limits will make you ineligible.

Who Cannot Apply for EWS Certificate?

• Anyone belonging to SC, ST, or OBC categories
• Families with annual income of ₹8 lakh or above
• Families owning 5 acres or more of agricultural land
• Families owning a residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. or larger
• Families owning a residential plot of 100 sq. yards or more in a notified municipality
• Government employees or pensioners whose family income crosses ₹8 lakh
• Anyone who has already received housing assistance through another government scheme (for scheme-specific EWS benefits)

Documents Required for EWS Certificate

• Aadhar Card
• Passport size photo
• Income certificate
• Get a PAN card
• BPL Ration Card
• Bank statement (last 6 months)
• Self-declaration form about income and assets
• Land/property documents ( if you own agricultural land, carry Khasra/Khatauni; for residential property, carry the registered sale deed or property tax receipt )
• Caste certificate to prove general category status

How to Apply for EWS Certificate

most states now offer online EWS certificate applications through their respective e-District or citizen services portals. The process is fairly similar across states:

Step 1: Go to Your State’s e-District Portal

Step 2: Register or Log In

Create an account using your mobile number or Aadhaar details. If you already have an account, simply log in.

Step 3: Search for the EWS Certificate Service

Look for “EWS Certificate”, “Income and Asset Certificate for EWS”, or “Economically Weaker Section Certificate” in the services list. It is usually found under the Revenue Department or General Services section.

Step 4: Fill the Application Form

Enter your personal details, family income details, property information, and family member details accurately. Make sure everything matches your documents exactly — even small mismatches in name or date of birth can cause rejection.

Step 5: Upload Documents

Upload scanned copies of all required documents. Make sure the files are clear and within the portal’s size limits (usually under 1 MB per file).

Step 6: Submit and Note Your Application Number

After submitting, you’ll get an application reference number. Save it — you’ll need it to track your application status.

Step 7: Track Your Application and Download

Once approved (usually within 15–21 working days), log back in and download the digitally signed certificate as a PDF.

How to Apply for EWS Certificate Offline

If your state doesn’t offer online applications, or if you prefer offline:

Step 1: Visit your nearest Tehsil office, SDM office, or District Magistrate / Collector office.

Step 2: Ask for the EWS Certificate Application Form (also called “Income and Asset Certificate for EWS”). You can download it from your state’s revenue department website or collect it at the office.

Step 3: Fill the form carefully with your personal details, family income from all sources, and property/asset details.

Step 4: Attach self-attested copies of all required documents and a passport photo.

Step 5: Submit the form at the counter. In many states, a small processing fee of ₹10–₹50 may be charged. Some states like Delhi and UP issue it free of cost.

Step 6: Collect the certificate after verification, usually within 15–21 working days.

EWS Certificate Validity and Renewal

The EWS certificate is valid for one financial year from the date of issue until 31 March of the next year.

For example, if your certificate is issued in August 2026, it will be valid until 31 March 2027.
