apply for Udyam Registration online

If you run a small business in India a shop, factory, startup, or service than there is one registration that make eligible for many government benefits: Udyam Registration.

It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system in July 2020. Since then, over 5.2 crore businesses have registered. The process is entirely online, takes about five minutes, costs nothing, and the certificate never expires.

What changed in 2025 is even more significant: the government revised MSME classification limits from 1 April 2025, meaning many businesses that had outgrown their category now qualify again and with it, regain access to collateral free loans, GeM tender preferences, and delayed payment protection.

This guide covers everything you need to know, including the updated limits, the correct step by step process, loan benefits, and how to download your certificate.

What is MSME Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the official MSME registration system of the Government of India, managed by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. When you register, you get a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a certificate with a dynamic QR code that can be verified online.

The registration is:

  • Free – no government fee of any kind
  • Paperless – no documents need to be uploaded
  • Lifelong – no renewal required
  • Self-declared – based on your own inputs, verified automatically against PAN and GST databases

Important: Only register at the official portal udyamregistration.gov.in. Many private websites charge a fee for this service, which is entirely unnecessary. The government has warned against fake sites repeatedly.

Latest Update: New MSME Limits

This is the most significant update to MSME rules in several years. Starting 1 April 2025, the government revised the investment and turnover thresholds used to classify businesses as micro, small, or medium enterprises.

Here is how the limits look now versus before:

CategoryInvestment in Plant & MachineryAnnual Turnover
Micro EnterpriseUp to ₹2.5 croreUp to ₹10 crore
Small EnterpriseUp to ₹25 croreUp to ₹100 crore
Medium EnterpriseUp to ₹125 croreUp to ₹500 crore

Key rules:

  • A business must meet both criteria (investment AND turnover) to qualify for a category. If either one exceeds the limit, the business moves to the next higher category.
  • Export turnover is excluded from the annual turnover calculation, so export revenue does not push you out of your MSME category.
  • Existing Udyam certificates remain valid, no renewal is needed due to the revised limits.

Who Should Register?

Almost any business that falls within the MSME limits above can register. This includes manufacturing units, service providers, shops, freelancers running a registered entity, startups, and trading businesses.

In terms of business structure, there is no restriction – a sole proprietor, a partnership firm, an LLP, a private limited company, a public company, an HUF, a co-operative society, a trust, or a Self-Help Group can all apply, as long as the business activity and financials fit within MSME category limits.

One important rule to remember: Each business can have only one Udyam registration, tied to the Aadhaar of the person in charge the proprietor, managing partner, or Karta. You cannot register the same enterprise twice. However, if you run multiple types of activities like, manufacturing and services both you can include all of them under the same single registration.

Udyam Registration Benefits

Udyam is not just a certificate that sits in a drawer. It is the key requirement for most MSME specific government support.

Loans Without Pledging Property

One of the most practical benefits is access to the CGTMSE credit guarantee scheme. Under this, eligible micro and small enterprises can get loans from banks up to ₹10 crore without needing to offer any collateral – no property, no gold, no personal guarantor.

Government Contracts Reserved for You

On the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), 25% of procurement by government departments is reserved for MSMEs. Registered businesses also get exemption from paying the Earnest Money Deposit when applying for government tenders.

Protection If Buyers Don’t Pay on Time

This is a legal right that only registered MSMEs can enforce. If a buyer purchases goods or services from a micro or small enterprise and does not pay within 45 days, the buyer becomes liable for compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate on the unpaid amount. You can raise a formal complaint through the MSME Samadhaan portal.

Subsidies and Cost Savings

  • Patent and trademark filing costs are subsidised for registered MSMEs
  • ISO certification costs can be reimbursed by the government
  • Several states offer concessional electricity tariffs to registered MSME units

Other Scheme Access

Udyam Registration is also the baseline requirement for PMEGP (PM Employment Generation Programme) subsidies, technology upgradation grants, and several state-level MSME incentive programmes.
