How to Track and Block Lost or Stolen Mobile Phone Using CEIR Portal

Lost your phone? Before you panic, know this, the Government of India has a free system that can block your lost or stolen mobile phone across every network in India, even if the thief puts in a new SIM card.

It is called the CEIR portal, short for Central Equipment Identity Register. It works through the Sanchar Saathi platform launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Till now, over 56 lakh mobiles have been blocked and more than 35 lakh traced using this system.

Here is everything you need to know, step by step.

What is CEIR Portal?

CEIR stands for Central Equipment Identity Register. It is a centralised system that tracks every mobile device in India using its IMEI number a unique 15-digit code assigned to each handset.

When you block your phone on the CEIR portal, that IMEI number gets added to a national blacklist. All telecom operators in India are connected to this system, so the blocked phone stops working on every network Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL, everything. Even if someone swaps the SIM card, the device remains blocked.

The CEIR is now part of Sanchar Saathi, the DoT’s umbrella platform for telecom safety. You can access it at ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in.

How to Find Your IMEI Number

Before you do anything, you need your phone’s IMEI number. There are a few ways to find it:

• Check the back of your phone’s original box, it is printed on the sticker
• Look at your purchase invoice or bill, IMEI is mentioned there
• Check your Google or Apple account, linked devices usually show the IMEI

Dual SIM phones have two IMEI numbers. You can enter both while filing the block request.

Documents Required to Block a Lost Mobile

Keep these ready before you start the online process:

• Police complaint copy (FIR or complaint acknowledgement from the police station)
• Identity proof : Aadhaar (masked), PAN Card, Voter ID, or Driving Licence
• Duplicate SIM of the mobile number that was in your lost phone (get this from your telecom operator Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL)
• Mobile purchase invoice (optional but recommended)

Steps to Block Lost or Stolen Mobile Phone on CEIR Portal

Step 1 : File a Police Complaint

Go to your nearest police station and file an FIR or complaint about the lost or stolen phone. Keep the complaint copy safe, you will need to upload it.

Step 2 : Get a Duplicate SIM

Visit your telecom operator’s store (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) and get a duplicate SIM for the number that was in the lost phone. Wait at least 24 hours before the next step.

Step 3 : Open the CEIR Block Request Form

Go to ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in and click on “Block Stolen/Lost Mobile”.

Step 4 : Fill in Device Information

• Enter the mobile number (that was in the lost phone) : OTP will come here
• Enter your phone’s IMEI number (15 digits)
• Select device brand and enter the model name
• Enter the approximate price of the phone
• Upload the purchase invoice if available

Step 5 : Fill in Lost/Stolen Details

• Enter the place where you lost the phone
• Select the date of loss
• Select your State, District, and Police Station
• Enter the police complaint number
• Upload a copy of the police complaint

Step 6 : Fill in Personal Details

• Enter your name and address
• Select identity proof type and upload the document
• Enter your email ID (optional but useful for updates)

Step 7 : OTP Verification and Submit

• Enter the captcha shown on screen
• Enter your mobile number for OTP and click Get OTP
• Enter the OTP received and click Verify OTP
• Accept the declaration and click Proceed

After submission, a Request ID will be generated. Save it carefully, you will need it to check status or unblock the phone later.

Your phone will be blocked within 24 hours of submitting the request.

How to Check Your Block Request Status

1. Go to ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in
2. Click on CEIR Services → Check Request Status
3. Enter your Request ID and submit
4. The current status of your blocking request will appear

Know Your Mobile (KYM) – Check Before You Buy a Second-Hand Phone

CEIR offers a KYM service to know about mobile phone, you can get information about device like it is blacklisted, duplicate or not via IMEI number, even before buying it.

To view the IMEI number, just dial *#06# on mobile phone, it will show details on screen.

KYM process is used by the Three Methods:

1) Do KYM via Through KYM App:

Download the KYM app on your mobile phone and input IMEI number, it will display mobile phone status.

2) Do KYM via Through SMS:

Send a text message with KYM < 15 digit IMEI number > on 14422 number, device information will display on screen

3) Through official CEIR Portal:

Via official CEIR portal, you can get all information about mobile phone through IMIE number.

How to Unblock Mobile Phone Online

In case you have found your mobile phone and want to unblock it for further use, you can do it via CEIR portal. For that follow below procedure.

• Visit ceir web link. Now on home page menu, click on “CEIR Services” option.
• Choose “Un-Block found mobile” option from drop down list.
• After this, a new form page will appears, fill the details here like block phone request ID, Mobile number you had blocked, a valid reason to unblock the device and mobile number to get OTP.
• Click on ‘Get OTP’ button and verify it. Then submit the form request.

How to Check Your Block Request Status

The current status of your blocking request will appear

Go to ceir.sancharsaathi.gov.in

Click on CEIR Services → Check Request Status

Enter your Request ID and submit.
